P1
a) Purpose
To build technologies that help people connect with friends and family, find communities, and grow businesses.
b) Content
The most commonly found content shared through Facebook includes: funny posts, creator content, current events, inspirational quotes and images, live videos, and photos from family and friends.
c) Target user/membership
In order to open a Facebook account, you need to be at least 13 years old. In the past however, there were more restrictions, such as needing a university email in order to join the site. Globally, more men use Facebook than women. A study of global Facebook users from Statista shows that 56% of Facebook users over the age of 13 are male. Male users between the ages of 25 and 34 years old are the biggest demographic on the platform overall. In the U.S. however, women are the bigger user demographic
d) Sources of revenue
Like most social media sites, selling advertising space is the best source of revenue for Facebook.
e) Legal/Ethical Issues
There have been a few occasions in the past where Facebook has been found to be leaking user information to outside sources, which is both illegal and against their own terms of service. Since then, these issues seem to have been fixed.
a) Purpose
To capture and share the world's moments.
b) Content
Allows people to share photos publicly online, or to message people privately through direct messages. It can also be used by small independent creators who want to spread their brand. There are two main sections to Instagram's main page, the feed, where content posted by people you follow will appear, and stories, where you can look at brief snippets of what other people are doing, including seeing content shared from people you don't follow.
Originally, there was no way to share other people's content with the people you know. The initial point of Instagram was more like a photo archive, so reposting would be like broadcasting and sharing content without permission. However Instagram created a feature allowing you to share anything someone else posts that you want to show other people by sharing it on your story. [this stuff also goes under legal/ethical]
c) Target user/membership
In order to open an Instagram account, you need to be at least 13 years old. 59% of internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 use Instagram and 33% of internet users between the ages of 30 and 49 use Instagram. According to one study, 17% of teenagers say that Instagram is the most important social media platform to them and 90% of users are under 35 years old.
d) Sources of revenue
Instagram introduces Carousel Ads to sponsored posts on March 4th 2015. On September 9, 2015 Instagram introduces small and large ad campaigns to their platform. There are also various paid features on the app that also act as a source of income, but they provide less for Instagram than selling advertising space does.
e) Legal/Ethical Issues
Instagram is a popular site for influencers to use. Although this does not apply to most influencers, there have been times when the site has been used to sell untrustworthy products, advertised from accounts made on the site to impressionable users. This isn't limited to the influencers themselves, anyone can create an account and pretend to be a celebrity and find there way to making easy profits.
a) Purpose
To give everyone the power to create and share ideas and information instantly without barriers
b) Content
Allows people to share thoughts and opinions publicly online, or to message people privately through direct messages. It can also be used by small independent creators who want to spread their brand. All posted content on the app is in the form of "Tweets", online messages that can contain either text or pictures that are limited to containing only 280 characters per message. All of this content will appear on your timeline, which is a collection of the tweets of people you follow and other's posts that have been "retweeted" by the people you follow.
However there are certain features missing from Twitter that have been heavily requested, such as editing tweets. Despite the high demand for the feature, it has not been added yet, meaning users have to delete and re-write tweets instead of simply editing them.
c) Target user/membership
In order to open a Twitter account, you need to be at least 13 years old. There are settings on the site that will help filter content and manage the time spent on the app. This includes Sensitive Content controls, Muting certain words or topics, Tagging and controlling the audience for your tweets, Blocking and Reporting anyone on the site who acts inappropriately, Discoverability settings controlling who can see your account and posts, Location information and Data Sharing.
d) Sources of revenue
Twitter sells online advertising space to companies. Ads are usually labelled with a "Promoted" tag at the bottom of the tweet, and sometimes even the video adverts in these tweets have another ad before the video starts.
e) Legal/Ethical Issues
Donald Trump used Twitter as a platform for inciting violence, leading to insurrection in the US. Trump's account was permanently removed, but only after the issue was being solved. There are many other issues that can occur on platforms like this that Twitter has tried to cope with. This includes the privacy and censorship settings mentioned above, but there are also situations in which a user's mental health could be at risk due to cyber bullying and death threats through the platform.
